personal food philosophies with what they feed their
pets, and brands are throwing tradition out the window
and distributing to any and all channels in order to meet
pet owners where they prefer to shop.
Euromonitor attributes $11.4 billion in pet food sales
to US grocery retailers in 2018, $7.2 billion to US pet
superstores and $3.8 billion to internet retailing. The
grocery retail channel delivered a modest 2.1% growth
from 2017 to 2018, pet superstores had a disappointing
0.3% growth over the same period and internet retailing, while having the smallest overall sales in this group,
grew a whopping 46.4%.

Online outlook
David Sprinkle, research director for Packaged Facts,
believes e-commerce is a necessary piece of the distribution puzzle for pet food and treat brands. "We at
Packaged Facts estimate that 12 million households
purchased pet products online in 2018, attracted by

the competitive prices and the endless aisle appeal of
Internet sellers, and this number will only increase in
the coming years," Sprinkle says. "For pet food marketers, an omnichannel approach is therefore a necessity in
a business whose consumer base will increasingly be doing some or all of its pet food shopping online."
Profitero, an e-commerce performance analytics platform, published a whitepaper detailing sales of pet food
brands online, specifically on Amazon. The three pet
food brands with the most sales growth between 2017
and 2018 were Rachael Ray Nutrish, growing at 56%;
Royal Canin with a 35% increase in sales; and Iams at
34% growth. These three brands individually sold more
than $10 million in pet food from 2017 to 2018 on
Amazon, according to Profitero.
In the middle tier, companies selling between $1 million and $10 million worth of pet food on Amazon were
Zesty Paws, Champion's ACANA brand, and Pawstruck.
Zesty Paws grew the most out of this category at 238%;
