EFFORT
More than 120 individuals joined forces this summer in
Loveland, Colorado to get a leg up on some of the overarching issues and opportunities facing the pet food and rendering industries. The fourth gathering of the Pet Food Alliance
(PFA) set competition aside and continued its focus on three
key areas: oxidation and product quality; Salmonella and
product safety; and consumer perception and sustainability.
Attendees committed to working groups, progress was shared
and future priorities were defined.
One group in particular, the Oxidation Working Group,
went to great lengths to provide meaningful data about
Peroxide Value Testing best practices relative to product quality. Peroxide Value (PV) is a common parameter by which pet
food ingredients are accepted or rejected.
At PFA's summer meeting, the group shared results from its
PV Test Methods Validation efforts and attempted to validate
multiple methods of PV testing, side-by-side in one laboratory at one time over a specific period of days with various
product matrices including fats and meals. The goal was to
gain an understanding of the variation between testing methods and to identify if all methods are statistically equivalent.
With support from more than 24 processors and suppliers,
industry volunteers evaluated 75 samples during a three-day
period in a single lab. At the same time, the group conducted
laboratory split testing which included sending 15 samples to
seven third-party laboratories. The labs used eight methods
each to evaluate the blind samples. This was all coordinated
and executed in one week.
The data set produced from this collaborative effort
showed some variation across all product types between the
different testing methods and possibly identified the need
for industry-accepted best practices, standardized laboratory
methods or new tools for the evaluation of oxidation. Most importantly,
however, the data can now be a starting
point of discussion between ingredient
suppliers and processors and will inform future improvements.
