A MASS MOVEMENT
Traditional pet retail barriers are breaking down, with most dog- and
cat-owning households purchasing pet food from Food, Drug and
Mass (FDM) retailers and larger chains in 2018, rather than from
independent and pet specialty retailers.

While dollar sales for dog food continue to trump cat food
sales, food for felines has grown and is projected to
continue growing at a higher rate than dog foods. In
2020, cat food sales are projected to grow 3.2% to $9.6
billion, while dog food sales are expected to grow 2.5%
but still lead the pack with $19.2 billion.

Innovations to the traditional pet food format are taking the market by storm -
from kibble plus diets that combine kibble with added inclusions to 100% freezedried foods - and these premium twists on kibble come with added costs.

commissioned by the
Marine Stewardship
Council (MSC), 40% of
pet food buyers said
they are excited about
purchasing products with
eco-labels, while 59%
said having an eco-label
on a product positively
influences their trust in
that brand. Overall 76%
trust the MSC eco-label,
which certifies sustainable
seafood practices.
