together
In my short tenure in the pet food industry, I've learned that it
is extremely collaborative. While each segment of the industry
has its own agenda, the primary mission is the same - to
improve the lives of pets. Whether this goal is met through
improving on tried and true, complete-and-balanced kibble
nutrition or through developing new formulations to deliver
targeted nutrition to dogs and cats, the pet food industry is
always ready to work together to find the best ways to achieve
its mission.
This fall, I attended two industry events that proved the pet
food industry is ready and willing to collaborate and work
toward its common goal. First, in mid-October I attended
KibbleCon at Kansas State University. This two-day event,
put on by KSU's Pet Food Program and Department of Grain
Science and Industry, invited attendees from manufacturing,
marketing, pet food development and research to learn from
each other and from other experts in the industry on topics
such as " Planning for New Ventures " , " What's Trending and
What's Next? " and " Economic Drivers of Food, Ingredients
and Agricultural Commodities. " K-State professors and graduate
students also shared industry research during the conference.
KibbleCon provided the variety of pet food industry
stakeholders who attended a unique opportunity to learn
from each other while sharing insights and ideas.
Just one month later, I attended another gathering of pet
food industry representatives at a collaborative event organized
by Balchem Corp. and Auburn University, appropriately
titled, " PetShure Imaginarium. " Eric Altom, technical
nutritionist at Balchem and one of the key organizers of the
event, explained the meaning of the event's title - " an imaginarium
is a place devoted to stimulating and cultivating the
imagination. " The event brought together R&D experts from
various pet food processors, meat companies, academia and
supporting industries to discuss where
the industry is now, where it's headed,
and some of the technologies available
for pet food innovation. Opinions were
shared and ideas presented, but most of
all, collaboration was celebrated.
I'm impressed to see so many sides
of the pet food industry coming together
time and again to collaborate. It's not about competition,
it's about achieving the same goal - providing pets with
the nutrition they need to live long, healthy lives.
