PATENTS TO PONDER
Spent brewer's grain as a pet food protein
To address the need for alternative protein sources that do not compete
with the human food chain, Mars, Inc. describes a pet food composition
with high levels of plant protein specifically from spent brewer's grain, a byproduct
from the brewing industry. The invention also details a processing
method resulting in a concentrated and upcycled protein ingredient.

Fermented preservative
Third Wave Bioactives has developed a method of inhibiting the growth of
microorganisms such as Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, and Staphylococcus
in food products, including pet foods, as well as extending its shelf life. This
is done through a reuterin fermentate, which is then applied to a finished
product to prevent the growth of bacteria, yeast and molds.

Fire hydrant pet treat
In February 2020, Redbarn's acquisition of Polyshot opened the door for
the company to begin developing its own injection molded dental chews.
This patented fire hydrant pet chew design is one of several released by
Redbarn since the acquisition.

Addressing feline urinary disease
Poor hydration in cats can lead to serious problems including feline lower
urinary tract disease. Hill's Pet Nutrition describes a method of reducing
the risk of urinary conditions by inducing proper hydration through a cat
food formulated with specific amounts and ratios of Omega 6 fatty acids.
The combination aims to increase hydration in cats.

Altering cholesterol in pet food
Elevated serum cholesterol levels in companion animals can lead to hypercholesterolemia
and other health issues. Nestlé has developed methods
for increasing or decreasing cholesterol, high-density lipoproteins or
low-density lipoproteins in formulations by incorporating distinct metabolites,
providing more control over cholesterol levels in the diet.
