Sustainable
actions
Stakeholders throughout the pet food industry agree that we
all need to look out for people, pets and the planet. We need
to preserve resources and make actionable changes so our activities
don't negatively impact our planet. However, believing
it's necessary to do is one thing - working to get the job done
is another entirely. Aligning missions with actions is easier
said than done and it's not often that you get the opportunity
to see positive change in the making. But, I recently got that
chance - in Decatur, Ill., of all places - at the unveiling of
Innovafeed's new North American Insect Innovation Center.
Innovafeed is a French biotechnology company that's been
producing insect protein for animal and pet nutrition since
it was founded in 2016. The company created a technology
that converts a viable protein source found in black soldier
fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae into valuable ingredients used to
feed livestock, aquaculture and pets. According to the company,
it has created a " sustainable agricultural value chain. "
Now, the company has brought its technology to North
America with the opening of its innovation center in Decatur,
and soon will follow with a 1 million-square-foot production
facility next door. The project will recover 300,000 tons of corn
byproducts each year from its partner, ADM, and will transform
the black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) that are grown in the facility
into 60,000 metric tons of animal feed protein.
Utilizing insect protein instead of relying solely on animal
protein helps provide a viable solution to the challenge of feeding
the world's growing population. But Innovafeed has taken
its sustainability mission one step further through its partnership
with ADM. Upcycling byproducts, such as the corn that is
used to feed the BSFL, provides a more sustainable circular and
zero-waste value chain. And, choosing to locate its insect farming
and processing facility close to ADM in Decatur will save
time and resources as well. ADM's reciprocal partnership with
Innovafeed also displays a commitment
to providing sustainable materials and
ingredients across the food chain.
Innovafeed's commitment to sustainability
since its founding in France,
followed by the opening of its innovation
center and plans for its larger production
facility in the next two years,
shows positive change in the making. Innovafeed and ADM
are not just talking the sustainability talk, but walking the
walk - and I'd love to see more companies follow their lead.
