Process
collaboration
Every two years, Process Expo, The Global Food Equipment
and Technology Show, showcases the latest innovation servicing
the food manufacturing industries. Hosted by the Food
Processing Suppliers Association (FPSA) and international
trade show and event organizer Messe Frankfurt, Process
Expo always promises to show off the latest and greatest in
equipment and technology. While there is a lot of crossover
between manufacturing technology featured in human food
plants and what is found in pet food processing operations,
pet food production technology often takes the back burner
to food production equipment. But, not at Process Expo.
Visitors to this year's show, held Oct. 23 to 25, were able to get
a firsthand look at pet treat processing innovation.
Three times a day during the three-day show, a live production
line demonstrated the production of pet treats (there was
also a line producing bacon and another making empanadas).
The production line featured a collection of 10 OEMs demonstrating
their technologies, led by Kansas City, Mo.-based design
and build firm CRB working as project manager, in a joint
collaborative display of pet food processing in action. While
the show always features company-sponsored booths highlighting
specific equipment, the pet treat production line was
truly a collaboration of technologies from around the industry.
All the equipment, from grinding, mixing, forming, freeze drying,
conveying, bagging, inspection and packing - with an
additional AI component - worked together to produce the
end product. The companies showcasing their technologies on
the pet treat line included GEA, Handtmann, Provisur, Parker
Freeze Dry, MontBlanc AI, Mayfran International, Ryson,
Matrix Packaging, Anritsu and JLS Automation.
" We're very proud of the production lines we've put together
here at Process Expo, " said Andy Drennan, senior vice president
at FPSA, who was tasked with overseeing the production lines
project. " There have been some challenges
in the year that it took to build
this line. But I just remind myself that
the brain power that's on this line will get
us through anything, and they have. "
While there is plenty to see on the
show floor throughout Process Expo,
the live production demonstrations -
which cannot be seen at any other trade show - truly highlight
equipment capabilities and industry cooperation. I look forward
to seeing more of these processing collaborations in the future.
