FDA TO MODERNIZE REVIEW PROCESS FOR ANIMAL FOOD PRODUCTS
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released its new Animal and Veterinary Innovation Agenda (AVIA) to help modernize
its approach to evaluating and supporting the development of innovative animal and veterinary products. From nutrition
to animal biotechnology products, the agenda aims to help increase regulatory flexibility, predictability and efficiency for the
animal and veterinary industries.
The AVIA applies to novel food ingredients that work to support an animal's gut health, cell-cultured animal food ingredients,
animal biotechnology products and more. Through the agenda, the FDA plans to reassess its animal and veterinary product review
processes to account for new products developed using innovative technologies. For example, the administration has been
working on new regulatory pathways for novel food ingredients (called zootechnical animal food substances) that function in an
animal's gut to improve feed efficiency, reduce waste output and improve human food safety.
" Novel technologies brought to the forefront in recent years have the potential to set a new course for the way veterinarians and
food producers support human and animal health, " said Robert M. Califf, M.D., commissioner of the FDA. " The FDA is committed
to helping developers bring products that enhance public health, animal health and food production to market while providing
consumers with confidence that they meet the FDA's high standards.
" This comprehensive agenda is intended to accelerate smart regulatory pathways and enhance continued public confidence in
the FDA's regulation of these products, while avoiding unnecessary barriers to future industry advancements, " he added.
Post Holdings expands pet food portfolio
Post Holdings, Inc. announced an agreement to acquire
Perfection Pet Foods, LLC for $235 million. Perfection Pet
Foods is a leading manufacturer and packager of private label
and co-manufactured pet foods and baked pet treats.
The acquisition includes all assets of Perfection Pet Foods,
including two manufacturing facilities in Visalia, Calif.
According to Post, the facilities will provide it with additional
capacity to insource a segment of its existing pet food business.
The deal will also serve as an entry point into the private
label and co-manufacturing segments of the pet food industry
for Post.
Following the closing of the acquisition, Perfection Pet
Foods' financial results will be included in Post's Consumer
Brands division. Post expects Perfection Pet Foods to contribute
about $25 million in adjusted EBITDA and a tax benefit of
$20 million.
The acquisition is set to be completed in the fourth quarter
of 2023.
Corbion develops fermented algae
ingredient for pet nutrition
Corbion introduced an algae-based ingredient to help meet
demand for Omega 3 fatty acids in pet nutrition without relying
on traditional marine-based sources. AlgaPrime™ DHA
P3 is created through precision fermentation.

mission to preserve what matters by offering sustainable ingredients
for healthier people, pets and the planet, " said Tim
Rutten, vice president at Corbion Algae Ingredients. " We believe
this breakthrough ingredient will play an important role
in meeting the growing need for better nutrition and more
sustainable solutions, while delivering value across the pet
industry. "
According to Corbion, AlgaPrime DHA P3 offers the highest
DHA level in biomass powder form available on the market
today, at 35% DHA. The ingredient matrix includes a natural
antioxidant system to stabilize the fermented ingredient,
which can be used in dry, wet and injection-molded pet food,
as well as treat and supplement applications.
